Donating to a Charity of Your Choice

My favorite charity is not allied with an ffp. How can I donate miles to it?

If you wish to donate miles to a non-allied charity, remember that you are not really donating "miles" so much as you are "awards." Miles belong exclusively to the earner, and cannot be transferred under the rules of most programs. But all programs allow you to redeem miles for awards in another person's name.

Thus, you can "pledge" the number of miles needed for an award ticket (usually 25,000 miles for a domestic round trip) to your charity, and they can decide whether to use the trip themselves or to raffle or auction off the trip. Once they've determined the name of the recipient (the auction winner, for example), you will need to book the ticket in the recipient's name.
