About Us

In 1995, the Komen Colorado Springs Race for the Cure^® was a Race brought to this community by a handful of women wanting to do something more than deal with breast cancer. A handful of women who said we will not roll over and let this disease consume our lives. A handful of women where each knew at least two other people that cared enough to give their time and talents to work on, develop, and pull off a 5K Race/Walk. A handful of women that had never attempted any task or project quite like this before. A handful of women that knew they could do something.

Komen’s National headquarters in Dallas told them to keep their sights realistic, that a 1st year Race would only draw 500 or so people. It did not matter. For we all know what happens when a handful of women get together!

Imagine the wonder (including Komen National) when that 1st Annual Race Report was written and the report stated 1840 people in our community cared enough to sign up and participate in the inaugural Race here in Colorado Springs!

That’s part of what this Affiliate is all about. We are a team. A team of people that care about what a breast cancer diagnosis can do. Not just the impact on a person dealing with a diagnosis, treatment and recovery - but the impact it has on spouses, children, family, friends – everyone.

We all have a story to tell. We all have a connection to one or more people dealing with and surviving breast cancer. That’s part of what this Affiliate is all about. “When I cross the finish line at our Race, I am not thinking about my time or if I’m 1st in my age group. I am thinking how happy I am to just be alive! To just run across the finish line knowing that there are so many people here caring about this disease.” That’s part of what this Affiliate is all about.

Our presence is growing, not only in the southern Colorado area, or this nation, but around the world! There are Races in Puerto Rico, Italy, and Germany. We join forces in a Race Series that tells the story of what we are all about. It started with a promise between two sisters. It started with a woman and her shoebox full of contacts. It started simply because someone did not want to merely deal with breast cancer.

The Colorado Springs Affiliate of the Komen Foundation has become more than just a Race. We are gearing up for a fantastic Race in 2004 – our 10th. But there are many more events occurring in 2004 in addition to a Race. We are expanding to a year round presence in our community that will include fund raising events such as bowling, singing and golf – although not all at the same time.

That is what we are all about. We stand together. We have become a unique family all with a story to tell. All with time to give. All with a desire deep within ourselves to truly make a difference. All with pride in our association with Komen and the belief that one day we will not have to run this Race or any other event. That one day there will be a cure.
